Dave Matthews Band Phoenix AZ
DAVE MATTHEWS BAND
Cricket Wireless Pavilion
2121 N. 83rd Ave. Phoenix, AZ, 85035
PHONE: 877-598-6671
PRICE: $40 - $70 : $70 for reserved seats; $40 for lawn tickets
More information
The Dave Matthews Band has been traveling to Arizona for 15 years, but its freewheeling shows still fill outdoor venues like Phoenix's Cricket Wireless Pavilion, which the group visits Wednesday, May 6.
This year's annual summer outing brings two changes to the band.
Pianist, longtime collaborator and unofficial member Butch Taylor has ended his association with the band, which was founded in Virginia in 1991.
He has been replaced on tour by guitarist Tim Reynolds, who also has collaborated with Matthews through the years.
The bigger change centers on the death of founding member and saxophonist LeRoi Moore.
Moore died in August from complications linked to injuries suffered in a June ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville, Va.
He has been replaced on tour by saxophonist Jeff Coffin of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones. Coffin has been well-received in early shows on the tour as he re-creates some of Moore's famous jazzy riffs but also adds some of his own.
Moore's saxophone work was used throughout the new album that Matthews is promoting, “Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King,” due June 2.
The band had recorded a few sessions before Moore's accident and had recordings of Moore noodling in the studio in between takes.
Matthews and his band carried on for the last few weeks of their 2008 tour after Moore's death.
The last show of the tour, in Berkeley, Calif., fell on the night that would have been Moore's 47th birthday.
Fans brought signs, Matthews wished his departed friend a happy birthday and the band showed a lengthy slide show on Moore's life before the band's encore.
Asked how the band will carry on without Moore, Matthews told the Richmond (Va.) Times Dispatch, “Hopefully we don't imitate ourselves. … His absence as it pertains to the relationship and dynamic of the band, that will change the chemistry, that will change everything.”
Of course, Matthews and his band long have been known as an outfit that transforms such fan favorites as “Don't Drink the Water,” “Ants Marching,” “Crash Into Me” and “Tripping Billies” into lengthy jams on stage.
The band — which also features core members Boyd Tinsley on violin, Stefan Lessard on bass and Carter Beauford on drums, as well as trumpeter Rashawn Ross — also is playing a generous dose of new songs.
The new album, which has Mardi Gras-style artwork drawn by Matthews and a sound to match, has been called a landmark work by the band leader.
Ultimately, concert goers will decide how the new music and band lineup fit into the history of this legendary outfit.
